A 6 page comparison of the differences and similarities of Islamic and western culture and religion. Defines each term and provides a background as to beliefs and the stereotyping and misperceptions which have arisen between these two cultures. Outlines the important precepts of Islam and concludes that Islam, in fact, shares numerous ideological similarities with the world's occidental cultures. Of these similarities is the belief in mankind’s inherent insufficiencies. The goal of Islam and indeed occidental religions as well, is to overcome mankind's insufficiencies by directing man toward a better way and, coincidentally, a better world. Referring to writings in Stevenson's The Study of Human Nature, the writer argues that St. Paul, in his Letter to the Romans and his First Letter to the Corinthians, presents the Christian view of human nature. Likewise, Stevenson uses an essay "Man and Faith" by Ayatullah Murtaza Mutahhari as representing the Islamic view of human nature.
