The Environment and Japan:the Ashio Copper Mine
[ send me this paper ]
8 pages. This interesting paper focuses on the impact of Tanako Shozo, Japan's first environmentalist, and the Ashio Copper Mine. In 1885 it was recognized that pollution from the mine had become widespread when people noticed thousands of fish in the Watarase River were dead because of water pollution. Additionally, sludge from the mine caused heavy flooding and the amount of metal pollution in the river depleted the rice production. Environmentalists such as Tanaka Shozo show us that while environmental laws are essential, there are still other ways to accomplish the many goals that still have to be attained.
