Animal Experimentation: Views From Two Classical Ethics Theorists
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. The ethical nature of animal experimentation has long been debated as to whether or not it stands as a necessary element for humanity. After all, the primary -- if not only -- reason animals are utilized in laboratory tests is to further the interests of mankind, often without the least bit of concern for the animals who forfeit their lives in exchange for medical, cosmetic and household product advancements. Classical ethics theorists Emile Durkheim and Immanual Kant may have had similar viewpoints on some issues, but when it came to concerns over the ethical fortitude of animal experimentation, the writer discusses how Durkheim would have befriended the animals' plight long before Kant would have, who adopted a utilitarian concept.
